November 13, 2024

1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Location

Zoom

This event aims to help UIC undergraduate students explore diverse career paths at the intersection of Computer Science and linguistics. This event is organized by the LAS Career Development and Internships, in collaboration with the Department of Linguistics.

Panelists include:

Devika Tiwari

Devika is currently a PhD student in Computational Linguistics and Cognitive Science at Georgetown University. Her research advisors are Dr. Amir Zeldes and Dr. Nathan Schneider. She received a double degree in Computer Science + Linguistics and Neuroscience from UIC in 2023 and continues to explore the intersection between these disciplines in her PhD. She aspires to find ways in which computational techniques can be used to hypothesize about how humans process language in the mind and brain. Recently, she has been working on research projects in computational neurolinguistics and figurative language processing in humans vs. language models.

Megan Herrera

Megan graduated UIC in May 2023 as a Computer Science major and Linguistics minor. At UIC, I participated in undergrad research in natural language processing. Currently, I am working at Discover Financial Services as a software engineer. My team supports the chatbot used by customers and call center agents.

Elise Hotchkiss

Elise graduated from UIC in Spring 2024 with major in Computer Science and Linguistics, along with minors in Spanish and Mathematics. She transferred to UIC in 2021, joining the Pre-CS + Linguistics program after completing community college. During her time at UIC, Elise had many opportunities to engage with the Linguistics community, presenting her work at UIC's In/Between Conference, tutoring students, and conducting research focused on sociolinguistics and disability justice. Now an early-career professional, she works as a Search Engineer, a role that combines her expertise in Computer Science and Linguistics to improve search technology and user experiences.
